So I worked very hard yesterday to fix the rust I did have and permanently prevent new rust. The rear twist beam had some decent crust on it, so I hit it with the pneumatic sander and 36 grit. Took all the old paint off and prepped it for new.

We used POR15 to paint everything. Ended up doing a majority of the chassis including the subframe and pinch welds. We also serviced my CVT since it was overdue.

The pictures are still wet paint, but you get the idea. I used POR15 prep, and then the paint. This was my first time ever running a pneumatic sander so it was a learning process. Nathan ran the needle scaler and took me under his wing so I could learn. I had some paint run off as I brushed it on but no worries as the sway bars are going to end up powder coated.

It was time consuming but also so relaxing. Having our new air compressor is the greatest. I love to learn and I love making this car better and preserving it. It’s all part of the addiction.

Do you do undercoating? I know it’s a sticky ugly mess, but it really does help keep things from rusting!

For now I just did the POR15 because it’s virtually indestructible. Next year I’ll end up throwing some undercoating over that coat of the POR. I wanted to wait till we seam weld before undercoating. This thing shouldn’t rust any more from here on out thank goodness. The rust it did have was knocked out and I’m glad we did before it got bad. Dang salty roads.

Nice job!

I hit the bottom of my new Mustang with about 4 cans of Fluid Film . I’m hoping it will keep t he rust gremlins away.

Wait. You have to remove the rust before POR15? Even if it’s surface rust? If so... uh oh.

I didn’t do the POR prep either...  How bad is that?

You can paint POR15 right over rust according to them directly. I just elected to remove any loose rust and get it as smooth as I could. The prep just helps to etch the surfaces; in their words. Nathan on the other hand did his duster exactly as you did and just slapped it on and it turned out nice. No worries.

Thank you - that was the answer I wanted! I didn’t have loose rust.

I bet the POR prep is if you taken it down to bare metal.

Exactly, if you’ve taken down to bare metal and it helps with priming the rust. It’s definitely not necessary for painting over rust. It’s more so just to prep fresh bare metal. Which was the case for me because I went wild with the sander haha
